How to become a tea snob

Do you dream of becoming a tea snob? Did you know that tea snobs are the only acceptable type of snobs in the world? Actually, being a tea snob will allow you to drink the best possible loose leaf tea for the rest of your life. So, put all shame aside and make sure to follow a few basic rules - and you will be ready to proudly call yourself a world class tea snob in no time.

Run away from the cheapest teas

Let's face it - finding the cheapest long jing tea is not a bargain. It's a misfortune. To successfully become a tea snob you should deny the existence of cheap teas. The only time when you actually do have cheap tea at home is when you need to brew a cup for those without any respect for your favorite plant. Being a tea snob makes you very conscious of the loose leaf tea value and you don't want to spend the good stuff on disrespectful people.

Start frowning

Start frowning whenever someone mentions teabags. As a tea snob you know that they contain only dust and fannings, and will never be able to give you the pure enjoyment or benefits. Unbroken tea leaves in silk bags call for a frown as well. They are created for lazy people, and there is no space for laziness in brewing tea.

Stop going to tea houses

Unless you are lucky enough to live in China or Japan, you should avoid going to tea houses by all means. Not all loose leaf tea is the same, and you know it. If they are good, they wouldn't be brewed for 3 minutes and served in a regular mug (or even worse – in a plastic cup).

Become an expert for words

Start correcting everyone that says tisanes are teas. Even though they can both be brewed, they are (in your opinion) a far more inferior from Camellia sinensis. Learn as much original tea names as possible and brag with the right pronunciation whenever you can.

Photo preferences

Stop posting photos of animals on your social media. Or selfies. Or nature. Or basically anything else that is not tea. Loose leaf teas are beautiful and it's only a matter of time when people will realize that. It's your mission to show them differences, colors and shapes.

The importance of tidiness

Your tea cupboard needs to look meticulously arranged. Do inventory check at least once per year and keep bags and tins neatly arranged. Make a list of all your teas and you keep a tasting diary. Same goes for your teacups and teapots.

Although there are many other rules to follow, these basic steps will help you get on the right track.
